William Adama's brother and sister had died before he was born, as a result, he was raised an only child. He grew up in Qualai, a small sea side town.

Adama was named after his half-brother and their paternal grandfather, as was the custom of Tauron, which his is descended from.

He was still in school at the beginning of the first Cylon war. He joined late into it, serving and a pilot of both Raptors and Vipers. His first post was on Galactica where his co-pilot gave him kept calling him Husker, and it stuck. He accepted Husker as his call sign with dignity.

During his time on Galactica, Adama proved himself to be as skill as a seasoned pilot, with a natural gift for flying. He received a commendation for destroying 3 Cylon Raiders during his first mission. He was challenged with limited resources and the one Raptor.

He was present on Galactica, during the end of the war when the Cylons boarded and attempted to turn the ships against itself. Through his efforts and teamwork with others, they managed to thwart the effort.

After the war, Adama went to work as a deck-hand on a merchant freighter of the civilian fleet. This was when he met Saul Tigh, a man who would become his closest and best friend.

In this time he also met Carolanne, the woman he would marry and who would give him two sons, Lee and Zak. Her family had influence with the defense department and got him reactivated to service. Unfortunately, this act became the downfall of their marriage. With Adama away on active duty more than he was at home, the couple eventually divorced.

Adama moved up in rank first as a major on the Battlestar Atlantia, then becoming the XO of the Battlestar Columbia, then the commander of the Battlestar Valkyrie.

His final mission before returning to Galactica as her CO was to escort a scout ship over the treaty line. The mission was a failure and the cover-up forced him to order the destruction of the scout and death of the pilot. Guilt led him to believe that it was this very mission that spurred the Cylon's attack on the Colonies.

The Battlestar Galactica would be his final post before retirement. The ship herself was also to be retired after 50 years of service.

The Cylons changed this by destroying the Colonies and chasing a fleet of civilian ships across the galaxy. William Adama commanded Galactica another four years. When they reached Earth all he wanted to do was retire, peacefully, quietly.
